Buena Vista University freshman Hailey Hearting (Nevada, Mo.) has been accepted to compete in the javelin throw at the USA Track and Field Outdoor U20 Championships on Thursday, June 17, at legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The event only takes the top 16 entries under 20 years of age with those individuals competing for a chance to represent Team USA at the U20 World Championships in August.
“I think it’s an honor, to get to share the same track as some of the best athletes in the world,” saysTy Hoover, BVU head track & field coach. “Hailey’s worked hard all year, in the classroom and on the track, and it’s great to see her get this opportunity! It’s amazing, Hailey came to BVU with the intention of hurdling for us, and in a quick turnaround we discussed her potential in the Pentathlon/Heptathlon, and she stepped up right away willing to learn a handful of new events, including javelin which turns out she’s truly a natural at. In only a short couple of months of practice, she was throwing top marks; it’s truly a testament to her work ethic and athletic ability. I’m extremely proud of the season for the whole team and Hailey, and excited for her to go out and represent BVU at one of the highest stages!”
Hearting was runner-up in the javelin at the A-R-C Outdoor Championships in May. She’s currently ranked third on the program’s all-time list at 40.63m.
She will compete at 9:30 a.m. PT (11:30 a.m. CT) on Thursday. Live results of the event can be found at: https://live.athletictiming.net/meets/74712
