Former Storm Lake wrestling coach Ty Seaman will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame- Iowa Chapter for Lifetime Service Award adding another award to his long and distinguished career. He will be recognized at the IWCOA Convention on October 18th in Des Moines.
Graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1982, Ty Seaman was a 4th place finisher in the Iowa State Tournament and was part of the 1982 State Championship team. He was also a member of the 1983 and 1986 IIAC Conference Championship teams for Hall Of Famer Al Baxter at Buena Vista College. In 1986 Seaman was inducted into BVU’s Athletic Hall Of Fame.
His coaching career would start in the fall of 1986 serving as an assistant coach at West Lyon in Inwood. He did this for two years and then took over the head coaching duties for five years. In 1991 his team was the Class 1A State Dual Runner up. In 1993 they were the Class 2A Traditional team Runner up along with the State Dual team Runner up. And in the fall of 1994 he would take over the helm at Storm Lake. He coached there for 15 years, from 1994-2009. His squad was a State Dual qualifier in 1998 as well as the Lakes Conference Dual Champions that same year. Seaman had a career of 53 State Qualifiers and 18 Place winners. His career coaching record was 250-160-1.
Seaman was Northwest Iowa Coach of the Year in 1992, 1993, and 1998. In 1997 he served as the President of the IWCOA. In 2008 he, his brother and his father were Grand March Escorts for the State Traditional Tournament. In 2017 he was named Northwest Iowa Athletic Director of the Year by the IHSADA. His passion for wrestling has continued through radio coverage that he provides from the state meet for South Central Calhoun, Ridge View, Alta Aurelia, Sioux Central, OABCIG and Storm Lake.Â
The Storm Lake wrestling team, now coached by Seaman’s son Ben, is planning to recognize him at one of their home wrestling meets this winter.
