Polls are open today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. across Buena Vista County, with Storm Lake voters deciding key city council and school board races.
In the city council contest, three candidates are competing for two four-year seats: incumbent Maggie Martinez and challengers Dalton Walker and Richard Riner. A separate two-year seat—vacated by Kevin McKinney—is being sought by Don Piercy, Jr.
All four council candidates participated in last month’s public forum hosted by SALUD and, where they shared priorities ranging from infrastructure and fiscal accountability to youth retention and immigrant safety.
Storm Lake’s mayoral seat remains vacant after no official candidates filed. However, write-in campaigns from Meg McKeon and Charles Hernandez have emerged.
On the school board side, incumbents Erika Dierking and Steven Mills are running unopposed. Both emphasized equity, outreach, and support for diverse families during the recent candidate forum.
Across the county, voters will also weigh in on contested mayoral and council races in Alta, Newell, and Sioux Rapids, along with active school board contests in the Alta-Aurelia district.
