Storm Lake Proud Funds Earmarked for Voucher-Based Landfill Access

The Storm Lake City Council on Monday passed a resolution to allocate funds generated through this year’s Storm Lake Proud cleanup toward a new voucher-based landfill access program.

The resolution earmarks just over $2,100—collected from 141 participants paying $15 each—for what council and staff hope will be a more flexible cleanup model next summer.

Assistant City Manager David Derragon outlines the concept.

The proposed system would allow residents to purchase vouchers and visit the landfill on their own schedule, rather than being limited to a single cleanup day.

Derragon noted the change could better serve working families and those with limited weekday availability.

After discussion, the council voted unanimously to allocate the funds toward the voucher program, with details to be finalized in the coming months.

Mayor Mike Porsch and city council members applauded the program.
