Storm Lake Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Pickaxe Threat

A Storm Lake man is charged with attempted murder after officers say he tried to hack his way into a woman’s home with a pickaxe while threatening to kill her.

The Storm Lake Police Department was called at about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday to a residence in the 700 block of Cayuga Street. According to the department, 53‑year‑old Philavanh Satibanjong forced his way into a detached garage on the property, stole a pickaxe and began striking the home’s rear entry door while yelling threats to kill the occupants. The victim told investigators Satibanjong made similar threats in September 2024.

Police say that when officers arrived, Satibanjong was still at the back door holding the pickaxe. He allegedly refused to drop it until several commands were given and an officer drew a firearm. A criminal complaint also states he attempted to force entry through the front door using a pocket knife, later admitting he cut himself with it. Damage to three doors at the home is estimated at about $1,500.

Satibanjong was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $101,780 bond. He faces six charges: attempted murder and first‑degree burglary, both Class B felonies; second‑degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony; first‑degree harassment and possession of burglars’ tools, both aggravated misdemeanors and second-offense trespass, a scheduled violation.

Online court records show a no contact order was issued the same day. Records also note Satibanjong does not speak English and will require a translator. An initial court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
