Storm Lake’s mid‑year checkup shows a city pushing hard on progress — and this week, the city council made it official.
On Monday night, council members unanimously approved the 2026 Mid‑Year Report, a detailed snapshot of how Storm Lake’s priorities, projects and departments have performed through the first six months of the year. The report covers everything from major infrastructure milestones to community engagement efforts, and serves as a benchmark for how well the city is following the goals set during last winter’s strategic planning retreat.
City Communications Coordinator Dana Larsen told the council the report is more than just a summary — it’s a tool to make sure the city stays aligned with the direction set by elected leaders.
The report highlights several major accomplishments, including securing and purchasing an 89‑acre site for a future water treatment plant — a project expected to cost around $100 million and take four to five years to design and build. The city also completed Water Tower No. 5, the largest in Storm Lake’s history, and placed a new well into service to help meet growing demand.
Street improvements continue to be a major focus, with resurfacing projects underway in several neighborhoods and planning advancing for Oneida Street reconstruction. Public services crews have used roughly 50,000 pounds of mastic since January to patch potholes and repair road surfaces.
The report also outlines progress in public safety. Storm Lake police logged more than 580 hours of training and participated in dozens of community outreach events, while the fire department responded to 121 calls and completed over 600 hours of training of its own.
Other highlights include Kids’ Fest drawing an estimated 1,500 children, expansion of the Storm Lake Proud beautification efforts, ongoing development of a new nature area east of Sunrise Pointe Golf Course, and recognition from the state’s Public Innovations and Efficiencies program — where Storm Lake was named Best Performing City for 2026.
