The Storm Lake Fire Department will kick off Fire Prevention Week with a community open house Sunday, Oct. 4.
The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Storm Lake Fire Station. Residents can tour the station, see fire apparatus and equipment and participate in a variety of fire safety activities.
A Fire Safety House and Kids Spray Wall will be available from 1 to 3 p.m., giving children opportunities to learn about fire and life safety and use a fire hose to hit a target.
Free hot dogs, donated by Fareway, will be available beginning at 2 p.m. while supplies last.
Firefighters will conduct a vehicle extrication demonstration at 3 p.m., showing the tools and techniques used to rescue people trapped in vehicles following serious crashes.
The open house will also include a touch-a-truck display featuring Storm Lake fire apparatus, fire station tours and information for people interested in becoming volunteer firefighters.
The department says a WINGS Life Flight medical helicopter and Iowa State Patrol seat belt convincer trailer may also be available, depending on staff schedules and emergency calls.
Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 4-10. This year’s national theme focuses on lithium-ion battery safety, with the message, “Charge into Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
The Storm Lake Fire Department will use the week to highlight the proper use, charging, storage and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are commonly used in everyday devices but can pose a fire risk when damaged, improperly charged or incorrectly disposed of.
Interim Fire Chief Blake Severson says fire prevention involves recognizing risks and preventing emergencies before they happen.
Following the open house, Storm Lake firefighters will visit schools throughout the community to discuss fire prevention and safety. The department will also share fire prevention information and updates through its social media channels.
Fire Prevention Week is observed annually as part of the fire service’s effort to educate the public about fire safety and prevention.
