Storm Lake City Council Opts Appointment to Fill McKeon Seat

With Storm Lake City Councilperson Meg McKeon set to become Storm Lake’s next mayor, city leaders have chosen to appoint her successor rather than call a special election.

The Storm Lake City Council voted during its bimonthly meeting last night to fill McKeon’s seat.

McKeon submitted her letter of resignation, effective Dec. 31, after winning a write-in campaign for mayor during the Nov. 4 city and school election. She will be sworn in Jan. 1.

City Clerk Mayra Martinez explained the process to council members last night.

Council members quickly raised concerns about the cost of a special election, which will be determined by Buena Vista County.

Councilperson Maria Ramos asked how significant of a cost the city would incur by holding a special election. City Manager Keri Navratil said the figure would likely be more than $5,000.

Several council members, including Maggie Martinez, agreed the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Under state law, the council must fill the vacancy within 60 days. Residents will have the right to petition for a special election within 14 days of the appointment.

A motion to appoint passed unanimously.

The council plans to accept applications and hold interviews before making its choice.

McKeon’s council term was set to expire in 2027. Whoever is appointed will serve until the next regular election, unless residents petition for a special vote.
