The Spencer girls basketball team, ranked 12th in class 4A, picked up a hard fought 62-47 win over Storm Lake Friday night at Tornado Fieldhouse. The Tigers Jerra Merchant made five of her seven 3-pointers in the first half helping the Tigers build a 34-30 lead at the break. Spencer would outscore the Tornadoes 15-6 in the 3rd quarter to build a double digit lead. Merchant finished the game with 30 points. The Tigers made eleven 3-pointers for the game.
Storm Lake was led by Avery DeHaan’s 20 points. The Tornadoes are now 8-11 overall and they finish the Lakes Conference schedule at 1-7. Spencer is now 14-3 overall and they finished 6-2 in the Lakes.
In the boys game Spencer played aggresive defense and shot 52-percent for the game in a 69-27 win. Owen Olson scored 20 points to lead the way. Storm Lake was led by Cam Boyd’s ten points. The Tigers are now 7-9 overall and they finish 4-4 in the Lakes.
Storm Lake’s record is now 4-12 overall and they wrap up the Lakes schedule with a record of 2-6.
The Storm Lake girls team will conclude the regular season with a game next Thursday at Le Mars. The Tornado boys play Saturday at Waverly-Shell Rock, varsity only at 5pm. The game will be broadcast on Mix 101.7 KAYL
