Storm Lake residents will head to the polls this fall for a special city election to fill the seat vacated by longtime council member Kevin McKinney.
The city council voted Monday evening to approve a resolution calling the election, which will coincide with the regular school board and city elections.
City Clerk Mayra Martinez explained the timing.
McKinney, who served Storm Lake for seven years, cited health challenges in his decision to step down after the Sept. 2 city council meeting.
Mayor Mike Porsch urged residents to get involved.
Nomination papers are available at Storm Lake City Hall, the Buena Vista County Auditor’s Office, or online at sos.iowa.gov/city-elections.
Candidates must reside within city limits and collect at least 50 signatures. Forms are due by 5 p.m. Thursday.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 4.
