One Teen Dead, Three Hurt in Rural Cherokee County Crash

A Cherokee High School student was killed and three other teens were injured in a single‑vehicle rollover early Saturday morning in rural Cherokee County.

The crash happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. near County Road C‑66 and J Avenue east of Washta.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling westbound when the driver lost control for an unknown reason. The car entered the north ditch, rolled, struck a utility pole and came to rest facing southeast before catching fire. The driver‑side rear passenger — a 15‑year‑old boy from Cushing — was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second back‑seat passenger, a 16‑year‑old from Cherokee, was ejected and flown to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver, a 16‑year‑old from Cherokee, and the front passenger, a 14‑year‑old from Washta, were taken to Cherokee Regional Medical Center with minor injuries and later released. The roadway was closed for about three hours.

Both the Cherokee Community School District and River Valley Community School District confirmed the students involved were connected to their districts. The teen who died had previously attended River Valley and recently enrolled in Cherokee.

School leaders say today’s classes will continue as scheduled, but counseling and support staff will be available throughout the day at both districts. River Valley has directed families to contact Middle School/High School Counselor Chauntell Geary at cgeary@rvwolverines.org or Elementary Counselor Gabby Elznic at gelznic@rvwolverines.org.

District officials are urging students, staff and families to seek support if needed and are asking the community to remain respectful of the family’s privacy as they grieve.

Authorities have not released additional details about the cause of the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
