No Injuries Reported in Rural Odebolt Train Derailment

Authorities in Sac County continue monitoring the site of a train derailment that happened late yesterday afternoon in rural Odebolt.

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office says the derailment was reported around 4:38 p.m. near Ira Avenue and 350th Street, about five-and-a-half miles southeast of Odebolt. Initial reports indicated that four to five rail cars left the tracks. Deputies and the Odebolt Fire Department responded immediately and secured the area.

Investigators say there were no injuries, and crews quickly confirmed that none of the derailed cars were leaking. There were no hazardous materials involved, and officials emphasized there was no threat to public safety. Fire crews remained on scene through the evening to continually reassess the cars and monitor conditions.

Ira Avenue was closed for several hours Monday as responders worked, but the Sheriff’s Office issued an overnight update around 3 a.m. today stating the road has since reopened. Railroad personnel remain on site this morning repositioning the cars and beginning cleanup work. Drivers are asked to use caution in the area and give crews plenty of room.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation. More information is expected once railroad officials complete their assessment.
