A Newell tradition roared back to life last month — and the community showed up in force.
Nieland Custom Meats opened its doors on May 21 with a pork burger feed and open house. By noon, the line stretched all the way to Main Street. Owners Aron and Crystal Nieland say they planned for a steady crowd, but not the kind that would wipe out 500 buns before the lunch hour was over.
Still, Aron was impressed by the turnout.
The opening brings back the Newell Locker, a business that served Newell for more than 45 years under Aron’s parents and grandfather. After the business sat empty for nearly two years, the Nielands decided the community couldn’t afford to lose its only local processing option.
That need has grown across rural Iowa. Since the pandemic, small processors have been overwhelmed as producers look for closer, more reliable places to finish cattle and hogs. The Nielands spent months gutting and rebuilding the plant with USDA‑grade walls, drains, rail systems and modern sanitation equipment — all designed to bring the locker into a new era.
But the biggest draw is the return of a Newell classic: the barbecue pork patties. They’ve been a staple for decades, and demand has exploded. Aron says they’ve already moved close to 65,000 patties — many before the store even officially opened.
The Nielands plan to expand into brats, beef patties, specialty cuts, tallow, lard and local products like honey and eggs. They’re also preparing to transition from custom exempt to fully inspected status, which will eventually allow customers to sell meat by the piece.
Beyond the business, Aron says reopening the locker has brought something else back to Newell — a place for people to reconnect, which he saw in full display on opening day.
And as the fourth generation already helps label packages and run equipment, Aron says the family hopes the locker remains a local anchor for decades to come.
Nieland Custom Meats, located at 206 W. Second St., is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday.
