New Sheriff To Be Appointed

The Sac County Board of Supervisors plans to appoint a new sheriff by Sept. 23, following the resignation of new Sheriff Jonathan Meyer earlier this month.

Meyer had been appointed in July to replace longtime Sheriff Ken McClure but stepped down earlier this month, just days after suffering serious injuries in an alleged assault at his Sac City home.

Court documents show 33-year-old Matthew Birt is charged with two felonies in connection to the Aug. 25 attack, which occurred while Meyer was off-duty but still considered “on duty” under Iowa law.

Chief Deputy Katie Stange is currently serving in the sheriff role.

County Attorney Ben Smith told the board of supervisors that holding a special election could cost taxpayers over $30,000, prompting the decision to pursue an appointment instead. However, once a new sheriff is named, residents may still petition for a special election.
