The Knights of Columbus Council 2326 from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake has awarded a $1,000 donation to Beauty Amidst the Ashes, a local faith‑based nonprofit that promotes adoption and foster care.
The funding comes from the Knights’ Cans for a Cause program, which turns donated redeemable cans and bottles into grants for community organizations.
Beauty Amidst the Ashes will use the donation to provide First Night Bags for children entering foster care. The duffle bags include essential items and comfort supplies meant to offer dignity and stability during what is often a traumatic transition. The organization says many children enter care carrying their belongings in a trash bag, and the First Night Bags are designed to ensure they feel seen, valued and supported.
Alex Berry, Buena Vista University biology professor and Grand Knight of St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus, said the grant reflects the community’s generosity and the Knights’ commitment to supporting families.
“The generosity of our community through the Cans for a Cause program allows us to support organizations that make a real difference in the lives of children and families,” he said. “We are honored to partner with Beauty Amidst the Ashes in providing comfort and hope to children during one of the most challenging moments of their lives.”

The Knights also urged the public to continue donating redeemable cans and bottles at the group’s collection sites: the cages in the Hy‑Vee and Fareway parking lots, and the site across from Sunrise Pointe Golf Course near Laven’s Northwest Monuments.
