Kids Fest Returns Sunday With Free Fun at Chautauqua Park

Storm Lake is gearing up for one of its biggest family events of the summer.

Kids Fest returns to Chautauqua Park this Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., offering an afternoon packed with free activities, performances and hands-on fun for children of all ages.

City Communications Coordinator Dana Larsen says the mission behind Kids Fest has stayed the same since the event began — but the impact continues to grow.

This year’s entertainment lineup includes two interactive magic shows with Mikayla Oz at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., balloon creations from Professor Von Air and performances from Drishti School of Dance, Deborah’s School of Dance and the St. Mary’s Dance Team, which is appearing at Kids Fest for the first time.

One of the most popular attractions each year is the foam party — and Larsen says that tradition continues.

Kids Fest will also debut a new mini golf course, along with inflatable games, bouncy pony races, sports challenges, spin art and the high striker game. City departments will host their own stations, including the fire department’s Fire Safety House, the police department’s YumVee treat truck, environmentally-themed games and the first‑ever appearance of lake protection mascot Freddy the Fish.

Larsen says more than 20 local organizations are helping bring Kids Fest to life this year.

Attendance is hard to measure in an open park, but Larsen says past events have drawn an estimated 1,000 children. He says the goal is to make sure every child feels welcome and included.

Children under 12 years old can pick up a wristband for free admission to King’s Pointe Waterpark later that afternoon. Older kids can get in for $5. Food trucks will also be on site for families who want lunch or a cold drink.

Larsen says organizers are hoping for a big turnout on Sunday.

Kids Fest is free and open to all families. More information is available at stormlake.org and on the City of Storm Lake’s social media pages.
