Storm Lake emergency crews responded yesterday to a gas leak on the Buena Vista University campus.
At approximately 11:50 a.m., a contractor performing underground utility work struck a large natural gas line near West Fourth Street and Grand Avenue, adjacent to Swope Hall.
BVU’s alert system immediately ordered evacuations north of Fourth Street, directing students and staff to shelter at Pierce and White residence halls, the Estelle Siebens Science Center, and Siebens Fieldhouse. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day.
Storm Lake Fire Department crews entered several campus buildings to conduct atmospheric monitoring. Minor to moderate gas readings were detected, prompting utilities to be secured and a second sweep to ensure no residual gas remained. Alliant Energy crews performed a shutdown of the line while Storm Lake Police implemented a one‑block safety cordon.
The coordinated response also included Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulances standing by as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
Fire Chief Terence Sinner thanked Alliant Energy, Storm Lake Police, BVU staff, and medical personnel for their assistance, noting the teamwork was critical in securing the area and protecting the public.
Repairs continued into the afternoon, with officials confirming the situation required several hours to resolve.
