A Chicago man who was on probation in Buena Vista County for trafficking stolen firearms is now headed to prison after his probation was revoked this week.
Twenty‑one‑year‑old David O. Washington appeared in Buena Vista County District Court on Monday, where Judge Carl Petersen imposed Washington’s original sentence after learning he had been convicted of a new crime in Illinois. Washington had been serving a three‑year probation term in Iowa following his 2024 conviction for trafficking in stolen weapons, a Class D felony. At that time, Judge Nancy Whittenburg suspended a prison sentence of up to five years.
According to the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office, Washington’s probation revocation was triggered when he was charged — and later convicted — in Illinois, where he received a two‑year prison sentence. Under Iowa law, a new criminal conviction is grounds for revoking probation.
With Monday’s ruling, Washington will now begin serving his previously suspended Iowa sentence with the Iowa Department of Corrections. His Illinois sentence remains separate.
The State was represented in the revocation proceedings by Buena Vista County Attorney Paul Allen.
