Two Hurt in Head-On Crash in Buena Vista County

Two men were injured in a head-on crash around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday night at the intersection of Highway 3 and M31 north of Alta.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 46-year-old Jay Lockwood of Rembrandt was westbound in a Ford Econoline van pulling a trailer. At the same time, 37-year-old Fidel Rodriguez of Algona was eastbound in a semi tractor and attempting a left turn onto M31.

Lockwood attempted to pass in the eastbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision. The van came to rest in the middle of Highway 3, while the semi tipped onto its passenger side, blocking the road.

Lockwood, who was not wearing a seatbelt, had to be extricated from the van and was airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Rodriguez, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

The condition of both drivers has not been released, and the incident remains under investigation.
