Suter Wins, Becomes Alta’s First Woman Mayor

Alta voters made history in the Nov. 4 city and school election, electing Desi Suter as the town’s next mayor.

Suter defeated fellow council member Jon Hansen with nearly 67 percent of the vote, becoming Alta’s first woman mayor—and, she believes, the first second‑generation mayor, following in the footsteps of her father, Curly Morris.

Suter says she was surprised by the decisive win, but deeply honored by the confidence voters placed in her.

Suter has served on the city council for the past four years and campaigned on revitalizing Alta’s Main Street. She hopes to improve buildings and infrastructure without adding tax burdens, making the community more appealing to residents, visitors, and businesses.

Another priority is the future of Alta’s library project. A $1.25 million bond proposal failed on the Nov. 4 ballot, but Suter says the idea isn’t dead.

Looking ahead, Suter says she wants residents to feel confident that city leaders are working in their best interest, and she hopes to move beyond patchwork fixes toward long‑term infrastructure improvements.

Suter begins her term as Alta’s mayor in January.
