Storm Lake Man Who Attempted to Pass Forged Check at Local Store Sentenced to Prison After Probation Revoked

A Storm Lake man has been sentenced to prison after his probation on a forgery charge was revoked earlier this week in Buena Vista County District Court.

23-year-old Mach Nyaw was originally sentenced on March 7th of 2023 for the crime of Forgery, a class D felony. On March 13th of 2022, the Storm Lake Police Department was called on a report that Nyaw had attempted to pass a forged check of around 500 dollars at El Mexicano II on North Lake Avenue. The fraudulent check was ultimately denied by the business owner. Nyaw fled the scene and was not located at that time. He was apprehended in Clay County several days later.

Nyaw was originally granted a five-year suspended prison sentence, and was placed on probation for two years with the Iowa Department of Corrections. In March of this year, the DOC alleged that Nyaw violated the conditions of his probation. On Monday of this week, Nyaw admitted to the violations and agreed to have his probation revoked. Nyaw’s original sentence of up to five years in prison was imposed.
