SL Airport’s Fuel Sales Face Potential Shutdown

The Storm Lake Airport could soon lose its ability to sell fuel, following a failed inspection by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources last month.

The problem? No electricity was running to the two underground fuel tanks, which could lead the DNR to issue a consent order that could revoke the airport’s license to sell fuel. The airport relies on fuel as its main revenue stream. Without it, operations may come to a halt.

The Storm Lake City Council briefly discussed the matter during its regularly scheduled bimonthly meeting Monday night in the council chambers at Storm Lake City Hall.

A Moville petroleum contractor submitted a bid for just over $28,000 to Bart’s Flying Service, the city’s airport manager, to make emergency repairs that include trench work and sensor fixes. However, council member Kevin McKinney believes there may be a more cost-effective approach, possibly cutting that total in half.

City of Storm Lake Communications Director Dana Larsen says the city council is still evaluating next steps.

Larsen says the city is looking closely at the repair bid and hoping for a clearer plan soon.

No action was taken by the city council. The issue was tabled, and the council expects to revisit the matter at its next meeting in August, with more details on possible repairs and next steps.
