The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has scheduled prescribed burns this spring in Buena Vista, Sac, Ida, Pocahontas, and Calhoun counties.
Burns are scheduled at Leo Grau and Pheasant Hills in Buena Vista County…Black Hawk Marsh, Burrows Pond, Tomahawk Marsh, Kiowa Marsh, Whitehorse, and the Jana Rec Area in Sac County…Washta Access in Ida County…Sorenson in Calhoun County…and the Leo Shimon Marsh, Sunken Grove, Lizard Lake, and Kalsow Prairie State Reserve in Pocahontas County.
Prescribed burns are used to improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plant species, restore and maintain native plant communities, and reduce wildfire potential. Areas are typically burned every one to five years. Prescribed burns will be conducted on a day that meets objectives and weather conditions typically between late March and mid May.
