The Newell City Council held a special meeting Tuesday night to consider replacing the city’s closed public pool with a community pond.
About 20 people, including Newell residents and members of the city’s pool committee, turned out for the meeting and were joined by Nathan Zickert, Pond Development Manager at Wisconsin Lake & Pond Rescue.
The pool committee pitched the pond idea after researching a similar project in Blanchardville, Wisc. The concept quickly gained momentum, says Mike Johnson.
The proposed plan would excavate the existing pool and install a synthetic-lined pond with decorative rock and sand and the option of adding inflatables. Instead of being drained, the pond would freeze over during the winter, offering potential for activities such as ice skating and hockey.
Zickert explained the next steps, which would require obtaining permits and hiring an engineer.
Council members raised questions about safety, insurance, and maintenance. The council emphasized the need for community input, suggesting a community meeting or a survey for residents.
Those in attendance at the meeting voiced support for the pond’s versatility and cost-effectiveness, but some asked whether it would meet the community’s long-term needs.
Johnson says the city is facing a tough time when it comes to the project.
No formal vote was taken, but officials say they’re open to exploring all possibilities.
