A man accused of murder in Cherokee County has been released after posting bond.
66-year-old Richard Hammond put up the 100-thousand dollar cash or surety bond on Tuesday, a day after he was incarcerated. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office charged Hammond with 1st Degree Murder.
Court documents allege he drove at a high rate of speed into the driveway of a residence east of Cherokee at 12:24am Monday. 47-year-old Christopher Wheeler of Sutherland was working on a truck when Hammond drove toward him. Wheeler attempted to run away, but was hit by the Chevrolet Silverado Hammond was driving. Wheeler died of the injuries despite efforts of first responders.
According to court documents, two witnesses stated that Hammond “100 percent intended to run over the victim.” The witnesses recognized Hammond, and identified him as the driver.
Hammond is scheduled to appear in Cherokee County District Court next Wednesday, April 30th. If convicted of 1st Degree Murder, Hammond would spend the rest of his life in prison, without the possibility of parole.
