Lake Avenue Lounge Leaves its Mark on Storm Lake Community Spirit

Wednesday night marked the end of an era as Lake Avenue Lounge closed its doors after 17 years as a local gathering spot.

Leased and operated by Curt Ellison—affectionately known around town as “The Dude,” a nod to the laid-back character from “The Big Lebowski”—the bar built a reputation not just for drinks, but for bringing people together.

Ellison originally took over the bar from his daughter and son-in-law. His now wife, Cindy Bosley, became involved about a year later and used the large space to host BozWellz Catering events.

Through the years, Lake Avenue Lounge became more than just a bar, says Ellison. From birthday and holiday parties and community meetings to pool, video game tournaments, and live music, it was a safe haven for connection, celebration, and support.

One of Ellison’s favorite memories was organizing annual Thanksgiving community meals—which grew from about 250 people to more than 1,100 in the final, 13th year of the event, before the pandemic.

The decision to close Lake Avenue Lounge—located on the third floor of the old Masonic Temple at 617 Lake Ave. in downtown Storm Lake—wasn’t sudden.

Ellison cited changing social habits post-COVID, declining attendance, and a desire to pursue personal passions like woodworking and restoring his 1923 Dodge Roadster.

As for the spirit of the Lounge, Ellison described it much like himself—relaxed and welcoming.

He hopes the community remembers the heart poured into the Lounge and the friendships formed.

Ellison says that a prospective tenant is interested in leasing the space, which will remain the site of the weekly Storm Lake Hy-Noon Kiwanis meetings. The property is owned by Orren Knoffloch. Additional parties interested in leasing the space are encouraged to contact Knoffloch at 712-299-7030.

Bosley will continue to run BozWellz Catering and BozWellz—located on Erie Street in Storm Lake—where Ellison plans to continue helping out.
