Iowa 3 Bridge Near Cherokee Reopens

The Iowa 3 bridge over the Little Sioux River in Cherokee is officially open to traffic.

The Iowa Department of Transportation says the project—located 1.3 miles east of the Iowa 3/U.S. Highway 59 intersection—was accelerated by a full year in response to last year’s historic flooding, which disrupted travel across northwest Iowa. The bridge closed in March.

The work included a full bridge replacement, a new overflow structure, and roadway upgrades—all aimed at improving long-term flood resilience and keeping the region connected during future high-water events.

DOT officials say the new design reflects a broader push for infrastructure that’s both efficient and durable.

The agency thanked drivers for their patience throughout construction and reminded motorists to stay alert in work zones, obey posted speed limits, and allow extra space between vehicles.
