Despite Recent Rains, Considerable Amounts of Topsoil and Subsoil Still Lacking Moisture

The first 2024 U.S. Department of Agriculture crop progress report for Iowa was released on Monday.

The report says although minimal fieldwork occurred over the last week, some producers were able to apply anhydrous, manure, and dry fertilizer. Iowa farmers had just over 1.5 days suitable for fieldwork last week, with just over a half day suitable in northwest Iowa.

47 percent of topsoil in northwest Iowa is either short or very short of moisture. Statewide, 59 percent of topsoil is short or very short of moisture.

59 percent of northwest Iowa subsoil is short or very short of moisture, compared to 76 percent statewide.

21 percent of oats have been planted statewide, which is 11 days ahead of both last year and the five-year average. 27 percent of oats have been planted in northwest Iowa.
