City Council Upholds Vicious Animal Dog Ruling

The Storm Lake City Council this week upheld the city manager’s decision that determined a dog to be considered a “vicious animal” that must be put down due to a series of incidents.

The pitbull mix named “Drake” has been accused of multiple attacks, most recently on June 14th when a child was severely wounded after the dog bit him during a gathering outside of a Geisinger Road residence.

The owner wanted to be able to take the dog outside of city limits to Cherokee for the time being. The council voted 4-0 to uphold City Manager Keri Navratil’s decision, which means the dog must be put down or destroyed due to safety concerns. Navratil made the decision during a hearing on June 27th.

City Attorney Phil Havens said the owner had the right to appeal the council’s decision in district court.
