712 Day Aims to Lift Storm Lake With Free Tabs and Local Support

Storm Lake is about to get its own day — and it’s coming with tabs open all over town.

Storm Lake resident and local creator Charles Hernandez is launching the first ever 712 Day on Sunday, July 12 — a community celebration built around giving back, boosting local businesses and bringing people together.

The idea started with a message from his former classmate, Ryan McClatchy, who has quietly donated thousands to Storm Lake causes over the years. Hernandez says McClatchy saw one of his business highlight videos on social media and pitched a new idea: put money directly into local businesses and invite the community to come spend it.

Hernandez says that spark quickly grew into something bigger.

The concept is simple: Hernandez and McClatchy are opening tabs — real tabs — at locally-owned businesses across Storm Lake. Community members can walk in, order food, grab a waterpark pass or even get a drink at Malarkey’s, and the tab covers it until the money runs out. Hernandez says the goal is to support local shops while giving residents a break during a tough economic stretch.

He says McClatchy’s generosity has fueled the momentum.

So far, Hernandez has confirmed Mexilao, Holy Smokes BBQ, Kings Pointe Waterpark passes and an open bar tab at Malarkey’s, along with food trucks in the Malarkey’s parking lot. More businesses will be announced as they commit.

Hernandez says the day is designed to feel welcoming to everyone.

He hopes the vibe inside each business is simple: relief, positivity and community.

Hernandez says he believes 712 Day can grow into an annual celebration — something that draws people from across the region.

With less than two weeks to prepare, Hernandez is announcing updates on social media and says anyone interested in donating can reach out directly.

He says the mission is bigger than him — and bigger than the tabs.

Community organizers are launching 712 Day, a new July 12 celebration built around open tabs at locally-owned Storm Lake businesses. The event aims to boost local shops and bring residents together through food, activities and shared community support. (Photo submitted)
