Tornadoes Win Instant Classic At MLK

Playing in the MLK Classic in Council Bluffs Monday the Storm Lake boys basketball team put an exclamation mark on classic with a 99-97 triple overtime win over Omaha Westside.

The Tornadoes trailed by as many as 17 in the first half but went on a 10-0 run late in the 2nd quarter and trailed 45-35 at the half.

The 4th quarter featured eight lead changes with the Tornadoes having a chance to win it at the end of regulation but they failed to get a shot up and we went to the first overtime tied at 75-75.

Westside’s London Dada drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 80-80 and force a second overtime. The Tornadoes then had a 93-90 lead with 6.9 seconds left only to have Dada hit another 3-pointer to force a third overtime all knotted at 93-93.

With Storm Lake leading 99-97 Westside had the ball with a chance to win or tie the game but Storm Lake would get a big blocked shot grab the loose ball and then celebrated a thrilling victory.

Jaidyn Coon made 12-of-21 shots and scored a game high 37 points. Cam Boyd made 9-of-21 shots and tallied 25. Trey Boettcher swished 5-of-11 shots from behind the arc including a pair at the start of the 2nd overtime. Garbieno Weno added 14 points and David William had eight.

Emre Gedik led four Westside players in double figures scoring 22 points and the Warriors fell to 11-4.

Storm Lake is now 10-1 and will play again tomorrow night at Spirit Lake. The conference double header will begin at 6pm and will be broadcast on Mix 101.7 KAYL. The games will also be video steamed at stormlakeradio.com
