Storm Lake Teams Sweep Newell-Fonda

The Storm Lake softball opened their season with a 5-1 win at Newell-Fonda Tuesday night. Avery DeHaan picked up the win allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five. The Tornadoes had eight hits in the game. Olivia Speers had two hits and two RBI’s and Mackenzie Harder had two hits.

The Mustangs, ranked 3rd in the first IGHSAU rankings, had seven hits with Kinzee Hinders going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Anna Mercer pitched the first four plus innings and suffered the loss. Newell-Fonda, now 1-1, will play at Spirit Lake Wednesday. Storm Lake will play at Sioux Central.

In the baseball game Storm Lake led 5-0 going into the bottom of the 7th inning and hung on for a 5-4 victory. Brock Edwards pitched 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed one hit and struck out nine. Charlie Dvergsten pitched 2/3 of an inning and got the save. Cael Phelps had three of the Tornadoes nine hits in the game.

Storm Lake, now 2-1, will host Pocahontas Area Wednesday night. The Mustangs, now 1-1, will play at Webster City.
