Maier Named Director Of Athletics At BVU

Buena Vista University President Brian A. Lenzmeier, Ph.D. has announced that he has named Amy Maier as Director of Athletics, effective immediately.

Maier has been with the department for the last ten years and has served as the university’s Interim Director of Athletics since August 2023. She began as an administrative assistant when she arrived in the fall of 2014 before becoming Assistant Director of Athletics in 2015, and later was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in the summer of 2021. Maier also serves as the University’s Senior Women’s Administrator.

“For over ten years Amy has been a dedicated champion for BVU athletics, our coaches and staff members while supporting facility upgrades” said President Lenzmeier. “I greatly appreciate how Amy places the student experience at the center of everything she does, and I have been inspired by how well she understands the powerful role NCAA Division III athletics can play in achieving BVU’s mission of preparing students for lifelong success through transformational educational programs. Amy represents BVU very well at the conference and NCAA level, and I am thrilled that she is willing to step into the role of Director of Athletics.”

Maier will continue to report to Dr. Brandon Johnson ‘04, who will now hold the title of Vice President for Athletics, Enrollment, and Marketing. Maier will take on the day-to-day role of staff, team and department oversight, and development. She will remain in charge of compliance work, competition scheduling, and will represent BVU at both conference and national meetings.

“I am very thankful to President Lenzmeier and Brandon Johnson for the opportunity to lead the BVU Athletics department and continue serving our dedicated staff and student-athletes,” said Maier. “BVU has truly become my home over the last decade, and I am excited to support the potential our athletics programs have into the future.”

Dr. Johnson, meanwhile, has overseen athletics since last fall when Maier stepped into the interim role. He will be responsible for, in collaboration with Maier and athletics staff, establishing and achieving the overall vision, long-term goals, and short-term goals for athletics.

“Brandon is a former BVU student-athlete who has successful experience overseeing athletics at a previous institution,” said President Lenzmeier. “Brandon understands the powerful role athletics can play in student development, community and alumni engagement, and campus climate. He also knows the integral role a strong coaching and support staff plays in creating and sustaining strong programs for our students and community.”

“I am excited to continue working with the athletic department and colleagues across campus to further create a vibrant and supportive athletic department that enhances the university experience for all,” said Dr. Johnson. “With the announcement of our new athletic performance facility and fundraising campaign, we have great momentum for future Beaver athletics success.”

In addition to these updates, President Lenzmeier confirmed that Maier will continue to be supported by BVU Head Coaches Steve Eddie, Trevor Johnson, and Will Baumann, as Assistant Directors of Athletics, where they will also serve as mentors for other coaches within the department.

“Brandon and Amy make a great leadership team, their talents and experiences complement each other nicely,” added President Lenzmeier. “They have a shared vision for athletics that aligns with our strategic vision of unlocking every student’s greatest potential to build better lives and stronger communities. I am excited to see what Brandon, Amy, and their athletics staff are able to build for our student-athletes and community in the coming years.”
