Newell Fonda Crushes GT-RA ; Advances to District Final

The Newell Fonda boys basketball team avenged a two-point regular season loss to Graettinger Terrill Ruthven Ayrshire by winning the 1A district semifinal postseason rematch in convincing fashion 83-53 in Graettinger tonight (Thur).

10th ranked Newell Fonda began the game on an 8-0 run, which was followed by eight straight points by GT-RA. The lead changed hands four times and there was one tie in the 1st quarter. The Mustangs took the lead for good late in the 1st quarter, and were up 16-13 after eight minutes.

The Mustangs put together a 12-0 run late in the 1st half, which helped them to a 39-23 advantage at halftime. The Titans didn’t get any closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Newell Fonda drilled 15 threes on 32 attempts. Mason Dicks canned six from downtown and had 22 points. Carter Sievers had a game-leading 28, and Ryan Greenfield chipped in 11. Eric Heinrichs led three Titans in double-figures with 16, as GT-RA winds up the season with a record of 16-5.

The Mustangs (18-4) will play in a 1A district final this coming Tuesday night, February 21st at 7pm in Cherokee against LeMars Gehlen. The game will be broadcast on 97.5FM KBVU. The Jays defeated George Little Rock in the semifinals 53-41.
