Falcons Start Fast, Finish Strong in Playoff Win Over Treynor

OA-BCIG was tested down the stretch, but two 4th quarter touchdowns lifted them to a 35-14 2nd round 1A playoff win over #8 Treynor in Ida Grove.

After forcing a punt on the opening series, OA-BCIG’s offense went 79 yards in eight plays in 1:49. A 51 yard run by Kelton Ladwig helped set up a one yard touchdown run by Kade Spotts to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead, as the extra point attempt fell short. Early in the 2nd quarter, a nine-play 85 yard drive in 2:47 was capped on a 4th and goal four yard touchdown pass from Brysen Kolar to Blake Corbin. Kolar’s two point conversion run made it 14-0 with 8:55 left in the half.

With just under five minutes left in the half, Jack Gilbert intercepted a pass and ran it 34 yards to the end zone. Ladwig’s PAT made it 21-0. Treynor took advantage of a short field and got on the board late in the 1st half. Ben Casey’s 33 yard touchdown pass to Jace Tams with 17 seconds remaining in the half cut it to 21-7, and that was the score at halftime.

The first seven drives of the 3rd quarter resulted in five punts, a lost fumble, and a turnover on downs. Treynor capitalized on another short field as they went 40 yards in seven plays. A seven yard touchdown run by Danny Kinsella narrow OA-BCIG’s lead to 21-14 with 1:55 to go in the 3rd. The Falcons put together a 14 play drive that lasted over four minutes on the ensuing series, but turned the ball over on downs at the Treynor 19 yard line. A sack by Spotts on 3rd down helped force a three and out.

Treynor’s punt gave the Falcons the ball at the Cardinals 42 yard line with 8:20 left. A 36 yard pass from Kolar to Ladwig put the ball inside the five yard line. On 4th and goal from the two, Kolar threw a touchdown pass to Jaxx DeJean to make it a two-score game.

A two point conversion pass from Kolar to DeJean made the score 29-14 with 4:48 left. Anthony Newquist intercepted a pass at the Treynor 12 yard line on the opening play of the next drive. Three plays later, Kolar dashed any remaining hope for the Cardinals with an 81 yard touchdown run.

Gilbert’s 2nd interception on the ensuing drive was OA-BCIG’s 6th takeaway of the night. The Falcons didn’t have any turnovers in the game.
