Verla Schroeder, age 97 of Lake View, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carroll, IA.

Verla Mae Arends was born on May 22, 1928, in Sac City, IA, to parents Albert and Rosetta (Vogel) Arends. She grew up on a farm a few miles east of Sac City, where she attended country school before graduating from Sac City High School with the Class of 1946. Following high school, Verla attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA, earning her teaching certificate.

On July 22, 1954, Verla was united in marriage to Eugene Schroeder. The couple made their home in Lake View on the lake, where they created many cherished memories together.

Verla dedicated her life to education, teaching at Wall Lake Elementary and Junior High Schools for thirty-five years until her retirement. She was a passionate and caring educator who made a lasting impact on her students. Verla was a strong supporter of Iowa education and was in many associations including the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and locally, the Wall Lake Education Association where she served on many committees.

Verla and Gene found great joy in being an aunt and uncle. They treasured time spent with their nieces and nephews and made every effort to attend their activities, as well as those of their great-nieces and great-nephews. They were proud host parents of two foreign exchange students over the years, both from Japan, Michael and Sachiko with whom they stayed in contact with throughout their lives. Verla also enjoyed special moments in life, including a memorable trip to New York City with her sister, as well as other travels—experiences she held close to her heart. Family meant everything to Verla. She will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and loving spirit.

Verla will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Verla is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Schroeder; parents Albert and Rosetta Arends; sisters Dorothy (Glen) Mackrill and Betty (Milton) Faulk; and nieces Rosalie Schulte and Victoria Ebrecht.
