Laura E. Herrig, 92, Boone

Laura E. Herrig, 92, of Boone, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

Laura was born on April 27, 1933, in Storm Lake to Linn and Emily (Hoffman) McConkey. She grew up in Storm Lake, where she met the love of her life, Fred Herrig. The couple was married on May 3, 1949, in Omaha, Nebraska, and together they welcomed four daughters: Judy, Barbara, Susan and Linda. Throughout their early years, Laura and Fred made their home in several Iowa communities before settling in Boone.

Laura was known for her impeccable sense of style and took great pride in always looking her best. She worked for many years at Marla’s House of Larger Fashion during the 1980s and 1990s. Eventually she owned and operated her own Marla’s House of Larger Fashion in Storm Lake. After Fred’s passing in 1990, she moved back to Storm Lake to run her business. Following her retirement, she returned once again to Boone to be closer to family. Laura worked as a door greeter at Walmart in 2015 and 2016, and became well known in the Boone Community.

An avid outdoorswoman, Laura especially loved fishing—particularly for bullheads at the Iowa Great Lakes and later at Lost Island near Ruthven. Many Memorial Day weekends were spent with family, fishing from sunup to sundown, creating cherished memories that have lasted for generations. Laura also had a lifelong love of animals. She and Fred always had a boxer or two by their side, and in her later years she lovingly rescued numerous dogs and cats who became treasured companions.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Fred Herrig; her daughters, Barbara Davidson, Susan Herrig, and Linda Herrig; and her son-in-law, Ron Davidson.

Laura is survived by her daughter, Judy (Bill) Haberman of Spencer; grandchildren Curtis (Danelle) Haberman of Storm Lake, Jill (Trent) Sievers of Albert City, Mary (Matt) Pohlman of Laurens, and Amy Davidson of Boone; nine great-grandchildren; sixteen great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday, March 27, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 309 S. Greene Street in Boone, with Pastor Mark Kvale officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. that day. Burial will follow at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Arrangements are under the direction of Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left to Laura’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
