Dorothy Lucile Sweeden was born on July 29, 1931, on her grandparents’ farm near Early, Iowa. She was the oldest of seven children born to Clifford A. and Henrietta J. (Miller) Albrecht. The family later settled in Odebolt, Iowa, where Dorothy received her education graduating with the class of 1949. She was baptized on September 6, 1931, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Early and was confirmed on May 12, 1946, at the Odebolt Evangelical Lutheran Church. When Trinity Lutheran Church was established in Odebolt, Dorothy transferred her membership there and remained active in her faith community.

While in high school, Dorothy worked evenings as a waitress at Clarissa Smith’s Hamburger Shop in Odebolt. After graduation, Dorothy began working up the street at the D&E Café which is where she would meet her future husband, Billy Ross Sweeden, when he came in for a hamburger one day. He had moved to Odebolt looking for a job at the Adams Ranch. Dorothy worked at the cafe until she got married.

On December 10, 1950, Dorothy and Billy Ross were married in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Odebolt. This union was blessed with three children: Billie Jo, David, and Jeffrey. Dorothy was content staying at home raising their children until they were all in school.

Dorothy’s love of flowers began at an early age. At just 12 years old, she earned her first and only blue ribbon, along with a $20 prize, for her beautiful flower beds. Inspired by that success, she continued to develop her passion for gardening and later studied floral design. She eventually opened Dorothy’s Flowers & Gifts in Odebolt, sharing her creativity and love of flowers with the community.

After operating the shop for eight years, Dorothy felt the pull of the outdoors once again and decided to return to her gardening roots. She accepted a position as a flower gardener at Shinrone Farms (formerly known as the Adams Ranch). Her first assignment was planting 200 tea roses, a project she began in March. Over the next three years, Dorothy’s dedication and expertise earned her the role of head gardener. She later joined Mr. Ken’s Health Spa, where she enjoyed helping others pursue healthier and more active lifestyles.

In the 1980s Dorothy began working for the Dubuque Packing Co. in Denison, Iowa, where she helped package processed meats for eight years. Her final job was working at the Arthur Café, which was owned and operated by her son, Jeff.

Never one to sit still for long, Dorothy also learned to drive a semi-truck getting her CDL. She took great pride in this accomplishment. She could now go on trips with her husband and relieve him at the wheel.

Dorothy had many interests throughout her life. In her younger years, she faithfully served as treasurer of the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. At home, she took great pride in caring for her expansive flower beds and garden. Each year, she enjoyed preserving the fruits of her labor by canning vegetables and making jams and jellies, which she generously shared with family and friends. Dorothy also had a passion for sewing and creating hand-tied quilts. Above all, however, her greatest joy was her family. She cherished the times when everyone gathered together, especially during the holidays. Whether fishing, enjoying weekend get-togethers, or spending vacations outdoors, Dorothy treasured every opportunity to make memories with those she loved most.
