Two Cherokee Teens Charged Following Storm Lake Vehicle Burglary

Two teenagers from Cherokee are facing multiple charges following an investigation into a vehicle burglary and an attempted vehicle burglary in Storm Lake.

According to the Storm Lake Police Department, officers were dispatched to a reported vehicle burglary in progress in the 900 block of Ontario Street at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.

Upon arriving in the area, officers observed two male suspects fleeing on foot toward the 1100 block of North Lake Avenue. Officers pursued the suspects, who continued running from police. A Storm Lake police K-9 unit responded to assist with tracking the suspects. Officers eventually located one of the individuals hiding in the area of the 1100 block of North Lake Avenue.

The suspect, a 14-year-old male from Cherokee, was taken into custody without further incident.

During the investigation, officers also learned of a separate attempted vehicle burglary in the 300 block of West Ninth Street. Police allege the same two suspects were involved in that incident.

The 14-year-old was charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, an aggravated misdemeanor; attempted burglary of a motor vehicle, a serious misdemeanor; interference with official acts and public intoxication, both simple misdemeanors; and possession of a tobacco product by a minor, also a simple misdemeanor.

The second suspect initially escaped and was not located during the Oct. 24 incident. However, Storm Lake police say officers located and took the second suspect into custody Thursday, Oct. 29. He was identified as a 15-year-old male from Cherokee.

The 15-year-old faces three charges: burglary of a motor vehicle, an aggravated misdemeanor; attempted burglary of a motor vehicle, a serious misdemeanor; and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.

Both teenagers were released to family members pending appearances in juvenile court.

The Storm Lake Police Department says the investigation remains ongoing.
