Traffic Stop in Storm Lake Leads to Felony Drug Arrests

Storm Lake police arrested two men over the weekend after a traffic stop led to multiple drug charges.

Around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, officers stopped a vehicle in the 1600 block of North Lake Avenue. The driver, 22‑year‑old Hanson Schumacher of Pomeroy, was found to have a valid Buena Vista County felony warrant. Police say they detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and a search allegedly turned up numerous marijuana products and drug paraphernalia.

Schumacher and his passenger, 20‑year‑old Anthony Esquivel of Alta, were taken into custody without incident.

Schumacher was transported to the Buena Vista County Jail on the outstanding warrant, which included charges of drug tax stamp violation, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, operating while intoxicated, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Storm Lake Police added further charges, including another count of possession with intent to deliver, hemp inhalation, and additional possession and paraphernalia violations. His bond was set at $12,600.

Esquivel was also charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, paraphernalia, and hemp inhalation. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $7,300 bond.
