The Storm Lake School Board on Monday approved the schematic design for the second phase of the Early Elementary Building.
The next phase of the school will consist of a 1st grade wing addition which will include 12 classrooms, as well as discovery and art spaces. The school board will consider approving the design development of the project next month. Construction is scheduled to start this coming spring, with completion targeted for the end of June in 2024, which would make the new addition ready for the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
Considering all of the unknowns and struggle to get construction materials, board member Steven Mills asked Van Leeuwen how confident he is with the end date for completing the project…(audio clip below :30 )
The Early Elementary School on the west side of Storm Lake opened in January of this year. Two months ago, 74-percent of district voters approved the bond for the second phase, which will not affect property taxes.
The third phase of the project, which won’t require a bond vote, will add a pre-k wing to the building, and construction on that phase will begin right after the second phase is complete.
