Storm Lake Reminds Residents of Snow Removal Rules

With winter weather in full swing, the City of Storm Lake is reminding residents to follow snow removal rules and stay safe.

Property owners are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 72 hours of a storm. The goal is to keep walkways safe for pedestrians.

Residents are also asked not to shovel snow back into the street. Crews plow overnight to avoid traffic, and returning to re-clear areas slows cleanup and can push snow right back into driveways. The city urges everyone to help keep streets clear.

Snow should not be piled on a neighbor’s property or dumped in public spaces like parks or alleys. Snow removal companies are prohibited from pushing snow across the street or onto other properties, especially in downtown areas where visibility is critical.

During a declared Snow Emergency, vehicles must be moved off city streets to allow plows to safely clear over 100 lane miles. Violators risk towing and potential damage.

Snowmobiles are allowed in Storm Lake, but not on sidewalks, park property, the golf course, or high-traffic streets. Full snowmobile regulations are available on the city’s website at stormlake.org/DocumentCenter/View/107/9-14-Snowmobile?bidId=.
