The Storm Lake Police Department will soon add a ballistic body shield to its protective equipment, thanks to a grant from the Buena Vista County Community Foundation.
Police officials say the shield represents a significant upgrade in officer safety, particularly during high‑risk incidents involving gunfire. A barricaded subject standoff in early 2025 highlighted a gap in the department’s equipment, prompting the push for a rifle‑rated shield capable of stopping high velocity rounds.
The grant will cover the cost of the new shield without affecting other equipment purchases. Matching funds will come from forfeited drug case seizure money, meaning no taxpayer dollars will be used.
Police Chief Chris Cole said the added protection will help officers safely resolve dangerous situations and better protect the public.
The department thanked the Buena Vista County Community Foundation for supporting the purchase and helping strengthen overall community safety.
