SL Library Not Ending Homebound Delivery Program

Despite rumors circulating around town, the Storm Lake Public Library is not ending its Homebound Delivery program.

The Storm Lake Public Library Board gave an update on the program during its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Monday afternoon.

The Homebound Delivery program offers a home delivery service for library materials to patrons who are unable to visit the library due to illness, disability, or other mobility challenges. The service is free and is available on both a temporary or permanent basis.

The service was initiated in the 1990s during Rose Peterson’s tenure as library director.

Library board president Mary Kay Hudspeth says the program has experienced a decline in users in recent years.

More than 25 library patrons once took advantage of the service. That number has dwindled down to only one current user.

Aside from technology advances, library director Elizabeth Huff credits changing demographics in Storm Lake as a contributing factor to the decline in program users.

Library patrons who would like to register for the service are encouraged to call the library at 732-8026. A brief interview will be conducted to determine suggested materials of interest and delivery preferences. Books, magazines, large-print materials, audiobooks, and DVDs are included in the Homebound Delivery program.

Huff says it’s best for interested patrons to be as specific as possible about their preference of materials.
