Sioux City Man Gets 10 Years for Storm Lake Assault

A Sioux City man has been sentenced to a decade in prison for a violent assault that left a Storm Lake woman with serious injuries late last year.

Thirty‑year‑old Colten Stroman was sentenced last week in Buena Vista County District Court to a term of up to years in the Iowa Department of Corrections for willful injury, a class C felony. Judge Charles Borth handed down the sentence on March 9.

The conviction stems from an incident at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of East Milwaukee Ave., where the Storm Lake Police Department responded to a disturbance just before 10 p.m. on Dec. 3. Officers arrived to find a woman with significant facial injuries. Investigators said Stroman had been intoxicated and arguing with the woman before the situation escalated.

According to police reports, Stroman left the apartment during the confrontation, displayed a knife, and threatened to kill a male victim outside. He then forced his way back inside, broke through a locked door, and assaulted the woman in front of two minor children. The victim was taken by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for broken facial bones.

Officers located Stroman still inside the apartment. He resisted arrest but was subdued and taken into custody. He was initially charged with a long list of felony and misdemeanor offenses, including first‑degree burglary, assault while participating in a felony, domestic assault, and child endangerment.

The Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office ultimately pursued the willful injury charge, which carries a maximum 10‑year prison term. Assistant County Attorney Ashley Herrig prosecuted the case.

Stroman has been transferred to state custody.
