Michael Schnoes of Paullina has officially entered the race for Iowa House District 5, joining the contest to succeed Rep. Zach Dieken, who announced last month he will not seek re‑election after serving one term.
Schnoes, a Republican, is a longtime educator with deep family ties across northwest Iowa. He emphasized that his family has lived and worked in the district for more than 125 years, with roots in O’Brien, Cherokee, and Buena Vista counties. Schnoes said his background in teaching and community service motivates him to step forward, describing his candidacy as a matter of civic duty.
In announcing his campaign, Schnoes pointed to past involvement in legislative discussions. He helped draft a 2025 parental rights bill that became law and has proposed measures aimed at lowering health insurance costs for state employees. He said he has spoken at the Capitol on multiple occasions and worked with lawmakers to address gaps in Iowa law.
Looking ahead, Schnoes pledged to introduce what he calls “common sense” legislation on a wide range of issues. His priorities include property tax reform, changes to eminent domain, infrastructure investment, education reform, parental rights, and public safety. He also raised concerns about loopholes in Iowa law related to child custody, driverless vehicles, and public access to lakes.
Schnoes said he intends to push for stronger protections for children, expanded mental health support, and improvements to state infrastructure that he believes will lower utility costs and keep jobs in Iowa. He added that he will not waiver from his convictions and intends to represent not only District 5 but all Iowans.
Schnoes joins Aurelia farmer Keith Glienke in the Republican field. Iowa House District 5 covers O’Brien and Osceola counties, half of Cherokee County, and four townships in Buena Vista County.
The primary election is scheduled for June 2, with the general election set for Nov. 3.
