A man has been charged with 1st degree murder after a fatal stabbing over the weekend in Galva.
According to the Ida County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 7:30 on Sunday night, the communications center received a 911 call of a fight in progress on Main Street in Galva. Officers discovered 26-year-old Eduardo Diaz III of Holstein lying on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to court documents, the suspect, 24-year-old Jesus Diaz of Galva, allegedly stabbed Eduardo multiple times in the chest and abdomen. Eduardo reportedly collapsed and died on the sidewalk. Jesus and Eduardo are brothers.
According to witnesses, Jesus punched and kicked Eduardo after he collapsed. Jesus crossed the street and then returned to continue beating Eduardo’s body. Jesus also allegedly assaulted a witness in the area. He was reportedly covered in blood when he was arrested. Authorities discovered a bloody knife in the back seat of Jesus’ vehicle.
The sheriff’s office says Jesus Diaz was transported from the scene of the incident by Holstein ambulance to Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was then booked into the Ida County Jail in Ida Grove.
Sheriff Wade Harriman says it is unknown at this time what led to the stabbing. The Ida County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are continuing the investigation. The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Galva First Responders, Galva Fire Department, Holstein Ambulance, Sac, Cherokee, and Woodbury County Sheriff’s Offices, Aurelia Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, and Iowa DCI.
