It’s not every day you get to be mayor of the town where you grew up — but that’s exactly the story for Justin Lyman, Newell’s newly elected mayor.
Lyman, who was born and raised in the Buena Vista County community, unseated incumbent Wayne Westergaard in the Nov. 4 city and school election.
At 45, Lyman is no stranger to city leadership — he briefly served as mayor in 2017 before stepping down to become Newell’s police chief, a role he held until last year. He now serves as a detective with the Sac County Sheriff’s Office.
Lyman says returning to city hall is about giving back to the community that’s supported him all his life.
His priorities include tackling Newell’s housing shortage, attracting new businesses, and keeping residents engaged in community traditions.
Beyond policy, Lyman has long invested in local youth — coaching sports, refereeing games, and even starting a scholarship program for students entering law enforcement. He and his wife Ginger also bring holiday cheer each December, dressing as Santa and Mrs. Claus for Newell’s annual Christmas lighting contest.
Looking ahead, Lyman says his first year will focus on forward planning and community involvement.
Lyman begins his new term as mayor of Newell in January.
