Applications are being taken for the state-administered and federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to assist Iowans with their heating bills.
Funding for LIHEAP is available for those who are struggling financially and qualify for state assistance. Household income and size, type of primary heating fuel, housing type, and other factors are considered. To be eligible for LIHEAP in Iowa, the total household income for an applicant must be at or below 200-percent of 2022 federal poverty guidelines.
The program began taking applications on October 1st for those 60 and older, and will accept applications for all others beginning this coming Tuesday, November 1st. Applications will be accepted through April 30th of next year.
Customers seeking help with energy bills should apply for LIHEAP at their local community action agency. Buena Vista County residents can contact the Upper Des Moines Opportunity office in Storm Lake. Other assistance opportunities may be available as well.
