Lake City Man Admits to Meth Trafficking, Illegal Gun Possession

A Lake City man has admitted to distributing methamphetamine while illegally possessing a firearm, pleading guilty this week in federal court in Sioux City.

Thirty‑four‑year‑old Clayton Brown entered guilty pleas Wednesday to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and felon in possession of a firearm. Federal prosecutors say Brown has seven prior felony convictions, which barred him from having any guns.

At his plea hearing, Brown acknowledged taking part in a drug‑distribution conspiracy that moved at least four pounds of methamphetamine over roughly eight months in 2025. Prosecutors say Brown twice sold more than 80 grams of pure meth to a cooperating individual in October.

A search of Brown’s home later turned up a Glock handgun, methamphetamine, marijuana, more than $2,000 in cash, and other items associated with drug trafficking.

Brown remains in U.S. Marshal custody while a presentence investigation is completed. Sentencing will be set at a later date in front of U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.

He faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with the possibility of a life sentence, more than $10 million in fines, and at least five years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa DCI Laboratory, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Wehde.
